A Declaration of Dependence

By Sam Nobles
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. John 10:9 NKJV

John Hancock was the first man to sign the Declaration of Independence. Prior to that moment he had listened to John Witherspoon, the only preacher who signed the Declaration of Independence, speak on the words of Jesus, specifically where Jesus says, “I am the Door”. On the way home, John Hancock mused over this verse and his friendship with Witherspoon. He said to himself, “I have always admired Witherspoon. I thought he was a logical, intelligent man. But tonight he didn’t make sense to me. How can Jesus Christ be a door? How can I enter in?” Hancock walked on until he came to his lovely home and then at the door began to fumble for his key. Once he found it he put it in the lock and turned it. As he did, he pushed the door open and stepped into the hallway. There sat his family, and he said, “Oh, I see.” They all began to laugh and they said, “Of course, you see. You were in the darkness and you stepped into the light.” “No” he said, “I see something else. I see that Jesus is the door and that faith is the key. Just as I put the key in the door and came into this house physically, at that moment, I put the key of faith in the door, and Jesus Christ has brought me into the light.”
America today needs to come to that door, a door that will be opened wide if only the key of faith is put in there. America needs not a Declaration of Independence – we have that. In the words of many other great preachers, America needs Declaration of Dependence upon Christ.
WE THE CITIZENS OF HEAVEN, inheritors of the Kingdom of God, children through faith in Jesus Christ alone, members of the Church, and Christian citizens of these United States of America, declare the following:
·      WE DECLARE our dependency on the one true and living God, who is eternal and perfect; who alone is the Creator of all things, and who sustains and rules over it all that is created.
·      WE DECLARE our dependency on the Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, who being eternal God, and equal with the Father, the one and only way to salvation through faith.
·      WE DECLARE our dependency on the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, divinely equal to God and Jesus Christ, that He has, in response to the prayers of God’s people, descended upon God’s people, outpouring over and above His work of personal regeneration, illumination, and sanctification.
·      WE DECLARE our dependency on the Bible, the infallible Word of God written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and has supreme authority in all matters of faith, life, thought, and conduct, and promises that if God’s people humble themselves and pray, seek God’s face and turn from their wicked and sinful ways, then God will hear from heaven, forgive their sins, and will heal their land.
·      WE DECLARE our love for the United States of America, as this nation was formed and created by God, is sustained and ruled in sovereignty by Him, and so, God’s people chosen by Him to live therein are heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ of all that is God’s, including this nation, and are called by the Word of God to seek its peace, restoration, and prosperity.
·      WE DECLARE our love for the people of the United States of America, those within and without the household of God, as we are commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ to love our neighbors as ourselves, in word and deed, and to help those in need.

Scripture to Claim:
and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  2 Chronicles 7:14 NASB
