The Power of Emotions

But whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster. Proverbs 1:33

The Power of Emotions

God made us. He knows us inside and out and knows every single thing about us - our weaknesses, strengths, the things that make us sad, fill us with joy, and what makes us afraid. He knows all about our emotions and the struggles they can cause us sometimes. He gave us emotions for us to experience life, and when they are in check, they can add to our lives, but when they are out of control, they can cause us lots of trouble.

Of all the things people must learn to manage in life, the most difficult and important is emotions. The power of emotions is beyond comprehension. They can overcome reason, create sickness, destroy relationships, lead to violence, drive people mad. Where negative emotions reign, the devil wins every time. - Van Houser

Emotions tie us to the world around us and help us to properly relate to what surrounds us. Sometimes what is going on around us is too much for us to deal with and all our feelings and emotions become exaggerated. This makes it difficult for us to respond with logical responses instead of emotional reactions. At times like this we have to remember what we know to be true and that is God’s truth. His truth sets us free from the bondage that our out-of-control emotions can create. Our feelings and emotions are sometimes unreliable, but God’s truth can always be trusted.

We live in a fallen world, we're surrounded by fallen people, and we ourselves are fallen. This past year has made this so much clearer to all of us. God’s presence is the one true source of security in our lives. We need to make the decision to obey God in every circumstance before we get in the middle of a difficult time when emotions are flowing fast and free.  We need to be resolved to trust and obey God in both the good and bad times.  God’s way takes us not only to His appointed end but blesses us along the way.

When we give our lives to Jesus, we give Him our emotions to Him to be managed by Him as Lord of our life. We need hand our emotions over to Him and trust Him with them. When we feel the chaos of the world closing in and our emotions are on edge, we can find comfort in Him and rest in the truth that He is in control.
