What Do We Do When We Mess Up?

What Do We Do When We Mess Up?

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

1.    Everybody sins, messes up.

…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… Romans 3:23

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15

2.    How does the Bible define sin?

All wrongdoing is sin… 1 John 5:17

A.   What about temptation?

1)    Temptation is not sin.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Hebrews 4:15

2)    Temptation is common

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1Corinthians 10:13

B.   Is all sin the sameYes and no.

1)

There is a way which seems right to a person, but its end is the way of death.

Proverbs 14:12 (NASB)

2)

3.    Why do we sin?

A.   We didn’t know it was sin.

…I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”  Romans 7:7

B.   We weren’t thinking about it.

All wrongdoing is sin… 1 John 5:17

C.   We wanted to.

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. James 4:1-2

4.    What should we do when we realize we’ve sinned?

A.   Own it

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

B.   Confess it

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1John 1:9-2:2

        When we

1)    Mess up.

2)    Confess up.

3)    Get up.

4)    Go on.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1-4
