But grace was given to each one according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Ephesians 4:7
The Gift of Grace
Grace is a gift. It is a gift from God and a gift we are to give each other. Grace is a part of who God is – His character. Grace is unmerited favor given to someone who does not deserve it. Someone who is unworthy. Someone who is completely undeserving. When it comes to God’s grace, that is all of us, yet He still offers it to everyone. We are all undeserving and unworthy when it comes to God’s grace. There is no way that we could every do anything to deserve what He gives. We could never work ourselves into being worthy enough. We could never earn His love, mercy, salvation, and grace.
Even though we could never earn it, God gives us grace – He forgives our sins and blesses us on top of that. Without God we are sinners, unrighteous, spiritually destitute, blind, unclean, and dead. But because of His grace gift, we are saved and through Him become righteous, clean, and we have new life.
For by grace we are saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8
Grace is a gift given by God. A gift is given with no expectation of anything in return. God simply gives us His grace, expecting nothing in return. It is not on loan and there is no way we could ever repay it. If is free to us at no cost, but grace cost the giver. God sacrificed His own son so we could know His grace, receive His grace and live in His grace.
Once we receive His grace, it is ours forever. It does not expire and God does not take it back. It is a forever gift to us. Grace accepts God’s gift of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus and responds in surrender.
In the chapters before this one, Paul explains grace to those who believed that we can be saved by grace, but we must follow God’s law to gain His acceptance. It is grace that separates Christianity from all other religions which teach actions to gain favor with God.
We are so blessed to have this gift of grace from God – that He gives us freely and we do not have to earn. We already qualify. There is no striving to please Him or live up to expectations that we can never meet. When we realize this gift we have, we can pass it on to others so they can experience the gift that is there’s also.
