Cupcakes and Floors, a Lesson on Faith:

Submitted by David Miller

I think Hostess cupcakes are a fun treat. They taste good, they’re light and fluffy, and that have that delicious creamy vanilla frosting center. They are amazing. Can you imagine your life before you had your first one? Life before you knew all about the awesome frosting center and its sugary goodness?  How would you have heard about cupcakes? Let’s imagine that one day you were hanging out with a friend and they began to tell you about how good they were. They talked about the texture, the flavor, and of course the vanilla frosting. More than likely, after hearing your friend describe this delicious, mouth-watering treat, you’d want to head to the nearest store and try one out for yourself.  What would motivate you to try this cupcake that you had never eaten before? It was your friend’s words that persuaded you that Hostess cupcakes were amazing.
That’s a lot like how faith works. Faith is just taking God at His word. Its trusting what God says above everything else. Just like you would trust your friend’s word that a cupcake was a great snack, you have faith by trusting that what God says is true. Hebrews says it like this, “The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living.” – Hebrews 11:1 (Message)
Faith takes God at His word. When the Bible says something, having faith is believing what the Bible says no matter what it might look like around you. It is believing that God is still in control no matter the outcome.  He has a plan and a purpose.
I have often said that God wants our faith to be as strong in Him as it is in our floor.  We do not look over the edge of our bed every morning to see if our floor exists.  We don’t sleep with a walking stick so that we can tap the floor prior to putting our feet on it to make sure it doesn’t collapse or give way to our weight once we stand up.  No, we just simply jump out of bed and there it is, the floor, faithful and true every time we walk.  God is no different; He is there every time.  When we jump into the thick of a trial, He is there, supporting us, and allowing us to stand on His Word.  He is there every time we walk, each step, each time we just have to stand, and each time we fall.  He is there.  That is faith.  Knowing that God is there all the time, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

So remember next time you rip open a package of Hostess cupcakes or stand on your floor, both can teach you a lot about faith.  Now go enjoy the taste of His goodness and stand on His promises!
