"One Thing I Do”

Philippians 3:8-16

In our lives, there are some things that God alone has to do in us, but there are other things we must do for ourselves. Those willing to exert concentrated effort in the pursuit of excellence in reaching our God-given tasks will have great success.

The need of change is evidenced by our sin

When you gave your life to Christ, He took it and now longs to make it what He desires it to be.

I.      Forgetting What Lies Behind… v.13b

To avoid spiritual pride

·  The past is a rudder, not an anchor. It guides rather than holds back progress.

To avoid spiritual complacency

·  God is not so concerned with where you have been or what you have done as He is where you ARE, what you are DOING and where you are GOING. He is a God of the PRESENT.

Two major problems in Christian perseverance:

·  Discouragement leading to Defeat
They are called "skeletons in your closet" because they are dead and need to be buried.

·  Overestimation leading to Complacency
It is hard to move forward when you feel like you have already arrived.

II.    Reaching Forward to What Lies Ahead… v.13c

To receive more from God than we've received.

To discover purpose and fullness in life.

·  Discipleship is aggressive, not passive.

III.   Pressing On Toward the Goal of Christ-likeness v.14

To live in continual victory.

To realize continued spiritual growth.

IV.  One Thing I Do

These three steps are actually one act:  COMMITMENT.
