A Little Kindness

Tuesday, September 1, 2020
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

This year we have seen so many emotions, swinging from one extreme to the other. In the beginning of the shutdown, there were many acts of kindness going on. Then, as time wore on and other issues heated up, simple kindness seemed to disappear. We have all been on edge, and we are tired of the mess, but let us not forget exactly who we are and what we represent. Here is a nice reminder we all need of simple kindness by Donna Lindquist.

What does the Bible say about kindness?

Several verses talk about God’s kindness and how we are to show kindness to others, but Colossians 3:12 says that as God’s people we must have a heart filled with kindness.  Another version says that we must practice kindness to others. This means that being kind should be part of our daily life that honors God.  So put your kindness into action!

Think of ways to add kindness to your day, whether it be with your family, friends, or neighbors.

Take time this week to read these Bible verses to learn more about kindness:

1)    Luke 6:27-31- THE GOLDEN RULE

2)    Matthew 6:1-4GIVE FROM THE HEART

3)    1 Samuel 25:2-42THE STORY OF ABIGAIL’S KINDNESS

4)    Luke 10:29-37THE GOOD SAMARITAN

 Why does Kindness Matter?

Ø  Kindness is a trait that describes a person’s character. That means that it is a part of who you are; words, actions, behaviors, and does not depend on a situation. Think of kindness like a riding a bike, it may come naturally for you or  the more you practice, the better and easier it becomes.

Ø  Kindness fosters other character traits like compassion, generosity, caring, understanding, and patience.  It is also a way to make lots of friends!  Everyone likes to be around genuinely kind people.

Ø  Kindness can be an answer to prayer.  God can use your kindness to help others in need, or someone facing a challenging time.  God is looking for your obedience, and willingness to help.  One small action can create a huge reaction.

Ten Simple Ways to Show Kindness:

  1. Help do chores around the house or outside
  2. Take a walk with a friend.
  3. Hold a door open.
  4. Give a compliment and smile.
  5. Clean-up someone else’s mess.
  6. Let someone else choose to go first.
  7. Write a nice note.
  8. Give a “virtual“ hug or “thumbs up.”
  9. Take care of a pet or plant.
  10. Use “please” and “thank-you."
Remember kindness. Remember that we can even disagree with people but still be cordial and show kindness in small ways. For the people that we are around all the time, that we love, we still need to be mindful to show kindness as well. The little things often turn out to have the greatest impact on someone's life.
