What Do These Stones Mean? (If These Walls Could Speak...)

 Wednesday, May 10, 2023

And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  I Peter 2:4-5

What Do These Stones Mean?

(If These Walls Could Speak...)

We are well aware of the fact that we remember the hard times more than good times. When is the last time you have really thought about all God has done for you and in your life? I had a friend tell me one day, “God has been good to you.” She was right. God has been good to me! Even when we are in the middle of a hard season, we need to regularly remind ourselves and those around us how good God is – all the time.

The Israelites built a memorial out of stones so that the generations after them would know how faithful God had been to the generations before. We can build a memorial too and we do not have to have stones. Our memorial can be built on the foundation of our lives. We can be living stones as we pass on our faith to the generations after us and carry out the work begun by Christ, the Chief Cornerstone. The way we live our lives will tell where our trust lies and the stories we tell of God’s faithfulness in our lives will be a testimony that is the foundation of our living stones.

For a building, the foundation is not only the support of the building, but also the source of the building. For the building to stand the test of time, the building needs to be of the same substance of the foundation. With Jesus as the cornerstone of our lives, we find our strength and our life in this stone of foundation. We build our families on this foundation.

If These Walls Could Speak -

What would the walls of your house say if they could speak? Most of us would not want the walls to tell all our secrets – you know, the way we act when no one else is looking or hearing? No one may ever find out what really happens behind the closed doors of our houses, but because we are living stones, our lives do speak. What story are they telling?

As Christians, we are also like "living stonesin the body of Christ. We acknowledge and respect the labor and dedication of those who have gone before us in this place. Individually we find our true place when we are built into the edifice of the church. A brick by itself is not a building. It is only valuable when it is built into a building, because that is what it was made to do!

We received a lot from those who have gone before and have been able to build utilizing the facilities and resources of those who loved their God, their community, one another and the lost enough to sacrifice.

For we are God's fellow workers: you are God's field. God's building. According to the grace of God which was given to me. like a wise master builder I laid a foundation. and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid. which is Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 3:9-11
