The Small Things

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”   Micah 5:2

Dear Santa,
I have been a good boy this year, despite what you may have heard from others.  For Christmas this year I would like:
•           2012 GT Zaskar 100 9R Carbon Pro Mountain Bike
•           Nintendo Wii U, games to go with it
•           Sony KDL-70XBR7 - 70" LCD TV
•           iPhone 5, or 6 if you’ve started on those
•           iPad 4, I’m sure you’ve got connections
•           And anything else that Apple is planning to release in 2013.
Yours truly,
Brian

Christmas for kids is a time to ask for the world.  Money is no object and the sky is the limit.  They’ve been inundated with commercials all year and they know exactly what they want.  Last year we got our Lego catalog in the mail and we asked our son to circle the things he wanted.  He brought it back to us later with almost every single item circled.  Those items that weren’t circled had a check mark next to them.  I asked him why some of the sets were checked and he said that those were sets he wanted me to get from Santa.

Our kids want it all and I guess we as adults do too sometimes.  How else do you explain the lines of people waiting for days for the opportunity to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest tech product that will be outdated in a matter of months?

We want the next big thing.  You know, the cool thing, the expensive thing.

But when God gave us the greatest gift he chose something small, the sliver of a country that is Israel.  The insignificant town of Bethlehem.  A young girl and her soon to be husband.  A little baby.

So while we’re out trying to give our kids the biggest possible Christmas we can afford let’s make sure they come away from Christmas understanding that God used the birth of a little baby, in an insignificant part of the world, to bring salvation and to restore our relationship to our Heavenly Father.

Scripture to Claim:
“Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. ”
