God’s Purpose for Pain (Part 3)

I Peter 4:19
Troubles come to all of us. We may ask the question, “How can I avoid trials?” The truth is that we can’t. The question we should be asking is, “How can I change the way I respond to hard times?” Knowing that trials have a purpose can make a big difference in how you face the hard time you’re going through.
When Experiencing Trials or Suffering…
I. Reflect on the Purpose of Trials and Suffering – James 1:2
II. Seek God’s Wisdom During Trials and Suffering
James 1:5-8
It is common to want to pray for more strength or deliverance.  James says pray for wisdom.
Wisdom is the convergence of knowledge and skill which enables a person to make right choices that honor God.
Maturity understands that there is not only a right thing to do but that there is a right way and a right time to do it.
God is interested in giving us what we need but not necessarily through our methods.
Asking by faith means that you are not going to God for His opinion¸ but rather His will.
Faith is believing that God will do what he has promised to do.
Doubt makes us "double-minded." It will only result in instability
God doesn’t give “advice”, He gives directions.
The wisdom we desperately need from God is wasted if we refuse to align with His direction.
God doesn’t work in us without our consent.
Obedience is the sign of genuine faith.
III. Look at the Big Picture  James 1:9-11
The ground is level at the foot of the cross.
Who you are is not determined by whether you have a lot or a little, but by your submission to God.
IV. Focus on the Reward  James 1:12
Going through a trial does not guarantee blessing
Persevering in faith through the trial does.
You are going to get two things if you persevere under trial: happiness and a crown of life.
