The Lord will fight
for you while you keep silent.” Exodus 14:14 (NASB)
This verse is one
of my favorite verses in the Bible. God
will fight for me! He is my advocate and my protector. There have been times in life when I fought
the battles, but there came a point when I needed a break. I had no more energy – spiritual, emotional,
or physical and I had done all I could do.
I was finished but He picked up the fight at that point and went forth
in my stead.
Just at the last
minute, when you are depleted and the impossible looms ahead of you, God comes
to save you. Moses and the Children of
Israel were in this exact place. They
were running from Pharaoh and now they were stuck with nothing but a sea in
front of them. There was nowhere to go
and nothing they could do. They
could do nothing but God in His power could part the
waters. We have to learn the limitations
of our own resources. God can part
waters, move mountains, and defeat the largest and most powerful armies. He can fight for you when you can’t go any
further.
The Catch…While you Keep Silent
Here is the catch. Sometimes it is hard to keep our mouth
shut. Emotions can distort our reality
and when our emotions take over in a weak moment it can cause us to speak out
in anger and bitterness with hostility – a very bad combination. The words may be the very thing you need to
say, but at that point it becomes the right thing to say in the
wrong way at the wrong time. If
we don’t take a breath and think clearly before we speak, we can expend a lot
of energy saying things that are not really constructive and which might even
be destructive. We also have to keep our minds and spirits quiet during this
time. If we have an imaginary
conversation in our head with someone we are upset with, sometimes it is so
easy for those words to pop right out before you can stop them. If you have thought it, it is easier to
say. Pray hard and ask God for patience
and to give you wisdom while He is fighting for you.
God is in control and He promises to
fight our battles for us but we have to be willing to let Him have the
lead. We are not supposed to be in the
background like a back seat driver telling Him exactly how we want it to turn
out. We are human and God knows
this. But He wants us to trust Him. He wants us to let go and let Him fight for
us. He knows what is happening in your
life. He sees the injustice and the
trials you are bearing. Take a step back
when you feel you are losing control.
Pray and ask God to calm your spirit and allow Him to work according to
His plan.
Make no mistake this verse does not mean that God
expects us to sit still and do nothing. This
is not a pass for you to sit in the stands and be a cheerleader for God. Sometimes faith requires being still and
waiting patiently, but most of the time faith in God requires action. There are times when He expects us to fight
the battle while He is there fighting alongside us or even behind us. He is waiting and watching, ready to take our
place when we fall. He sees your pain
and He sees your struggle. This verse is
a promise that when we can’t fight, He will fight for us.
We can find such great comfort and
security knowing that when we have reached the end of our efforts and strength,
our God will take over for us. He is our
rock, our strength when we are weak. He is the lifter of our head and our
rescuer.
Scripture to claim:
Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Isaiah 46:4
