Psalm 39
Psalm 39:1 - I said, "I will
guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with
a muzzle while the wicked are in my presence."
Hiding our
Feelings is Dishonesty with Ourselves and Others.
Do you have a “Sunday personality” that is pulled out for display on
your way to church? Or, do you sometimes
feel the need to change your behavior to “act like a Christian” when someone
mentions they have seen you at church?
Do you feel the need to act strong when you feel weak to protect God’s
reputation?
Hiding the
truth from the ungodly so God's reputation is kept is exactly what David is speaking of in verse 1. He shares that he "kept up a good
front" so the people would not think that God was weak and think less of
God even though the reality of his life was different.
Here is something worth thinking about.
If true Christianity can ever be confessed, it is possible that more
people would receive it. I don’t
know about you, but those who speak of a life that has no problems or disharmony
because they are saved give me the creeps.
They certainly do not testify of the experience of thousands of other
believers I know...me included.
God does not need us to defend His character or love by living lies
about our faith. True Christianity as I
have experienced it is not life without negative circumstances or personal
struggles, but Christ working through them to sustain and mature me. Christ takes us through our circumstances as
often as over our problems.
As we live our lives in honesty with our doubts and faith, with our fear
and courage and with our weakness and strength displayed, more people will be
drawn to our God when the victory is won.
God’s power is seen more clearly in our deliverance than our
avoidance.
