For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. Psalm 107:9
Our world today is a world of quick fixes. We have grocery shopping at our fingertips and we don’t even have to leave the house to pick it up. We can have it delivered, brought right into our house and placed on our kitchen counters for us. We have the internet, movies and TV in the palm of our hands constantly. We can get just about anything we want, anytime, with hardly any waiting period. We can even check in online at some doctor’s offices and receive a call when it is close to our time so we don’t have to wait in the waiting room. We are a society of we want what we want when we want it. We are also a society obsessed with achievement and having. We seem to be always in pursuit of whatever we think will make us happy, whether it is another car, house, boat, or more clothes and shoes. It could be a career position or a relationship status, or the number of followers we have on Instagram.
What is it that we are searching for? What do we think we are going to find when finally get that “one more thing”? We are all looking for something that cannot be found online, in the mall, at the car dealership or the mortgage company. We are searching for fulfillment. The ironic thing is that all this pursuit takes us in the opposite direction of fulfillment. In fact, it leaves us empty and in pursuit for even more.
When we are unfulfilled, we are dissatisfied, and dissatisfaction can lead us down the wrong pathover and over again. We go looking in all the wrong places, for all the wrong things to fulfill us, to satisfy the longing in our soul. As long as we are dumping junk in, our soul is a bottomless pit. Fulfillment and satisfaction will never come. And while we are on this endless pursuit, there is one chasing after us, in pursuit of us. He has the answer to our emptiness. He holds our satisfaction and fulfillment in His hands and He is calling to us to turn around and look to Him. The longing we are seeking to satisfy will only come from Him. There is nothing in a garage, in the shopping cart, or sitting on a piece of land that will do it. There is nothing this world offers that can fulfill the longing of the soul.
Stop running, stop chasing, stop pursuing. Allow yourself to be caught up in the arms of Jesus. He loves you enough to chase after you, to wait on you. He has everything you need. He has everything you could ever want. Fulfillment is what we are after and He is the only place we can get it. Every earthly fulfillment dries up or runs out. Things get old and moth eaten. Cars break and houses fall down. In Jesus, we find everlasting, never-ending fulfillment. His fountain of satisfaction never dries up.
