Blessed are the meek

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying…Matthew 5:1-2
The eight sermons from the Beatitudes display the development of Christian character as each beatitude leads to the next.  The logical flow of these teachings should display the journey we make to become disciples of Christ in the way we live our lives. Yesterday’s Beatitude was Blessed are those who mourn and today’s is Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.  Matthew 5:5
The vision that most people have of meekness is one that can be pushed around, walked over, abused, sneered at and insulted without giving any conflicting response.  No one finds this person "fortunate or to be envied" let alone "blessed."  He is usually pitied or laughed at.  This beatitude builds upon the previous two.  One who is poor in spirit and recognizes their need of God, and is broken by that need, will soon become teachable.  The sequence is NEED, BROKENNESS, then TEACHABLE.
Meekness is not an attitude of man but a fruit of the Spirit of God.  It is a new attitude resulting from being humbled and broken which exudes patience and power and a full experience of life’s benefits.  One who is broken is ready to listen and not argue while a fool believes that if he keeps talking he can prove himself right.  There is humility in the heart of one who has realized their own sinful nature and been blessed to receive the revealed Word of God not pride.
Meekness is the result of putting our trust in God.  We acknowledge that we are mere humans and He is almighty God.  We are humbled by that realization and give Him full lease on our anxieties, frustrations, and burdens.  Sometimes I don’t even want to think about the things that are troubling me anymore, not even long enough to pray about them.  At that point, I just say God this is yours.  I can’t.   I realize that I need Him and yes, I am broken by that need.  But this is a good broken.  Then and only then can I be taught and helped by Him.
So being meek is not being weak.  Meekness is not even about you or me.  It is all about God.  It can only come from Him.  When we yield to Him in meekness, we get stability and peace.  We let go of pride and gain fullness in Christ.

Scripture to claim:

But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.  Psalm 37:11
