Everything is so weary and tiresome! No matter how much we see,
we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content. History
merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is
truly new. Ecclesiastes 1:8-9 NLT
Are you tired and weary? How many people feel this way about
their lives! We seem to rush here and there with never a break in sight. We can become overwhelmed with challenges.
Burned out by long hours and pressure. Restless about family and financial
burdens.
Seeking to escape this weariness, many turn to pleasure.
Unfortunately, some of those pleasures show up in the form of an
addiction. Others when frustrated or
discouraged, look for escapes, or just a change; hoping to find relief through
a new job or a new house. They enter a new relationship or change lifestyles or
doing something different. To some cosmetic changes can make a difference, at
least to some extent. And none of these coping mechanisms are not necessarily
bad in themselves, however, we find some additional insight in the book of
Ecclesiastes.
The author of Ecclesiastes reminds us of many fundamental
truths about life. We need to remember that “there is no new thing under the sun.”
What is new today becomes old tomorrow. What seems fresh today may seem
commonplace tomorrow. What seems exciting today can seem routine tomorrow. What
feels like a revelation today becomes old news tomorrow.
It can be easy just to focus on temporary escapes, and
short-term pleasures. But the Bible tells us that these things are like chasing
the wind. God offers us something deeper. A life of meaning and purpose.
Answers to life’s challenges. The Bible
urges us to realize that the key is to trust God. To serve Him. To depend upon
Him. To realize that “those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will
soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will
walk and not faint” Isaiah 40:31.
Do you feel tired? Weary? Overwhelmed? Frustrated? These are
moments to seek God. To pray and seek His help. His strength. His perspective.
Make sure that you are living according to His Word. And that you place your
trust in Him. Rest for your weariness
will soon come.
