BROTHERLY KINDNESS

Submitted by Donna Lindquist
…and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 1 Peter 1:7

When we think about brothers, most of the time we think of silly games, horse-play or sibling rivalry. I have brothers and sometimes it was a challenge to motivate them to be kind, especially to a little sister.
2 Peter 1:7 advises us to add to our faith - brotherly kindness and that this quality should increase, and be useful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus.
So, think about these 3 characteristics that define a brother:
1. Protector
2. Teacher
3. Friend
Brotherly kindness can be defined as a caring relationship that protects, teaches, and is a trusted friendship. What a wonderful blessing!
So, think about your siblings, or extended family members, have you established a strong faith connection with them, and found this easily put into practice? Or do you find it difficult to share your faith with even a close family member, or a trusted friend.
Think about the people in our places of work, school, or neighborhoods, can you demonstrate these qualities of a Christian brother outside of your family.
Can you be a protector of the innocent, or be an advocate for an injustice?
Can you be a teacher to those who are learning and following behind us?
Can you be a true friend to our colleagues or classmates?
Brotherly kindness can be a challenging characteristic, but Jesus gave us a perfect example. He wants us to imitate him and show kind affection to our Christian friends and neighbors.
Jesus relied on his disciples during His earthly ministry. He protected and taught them and realized the value of a strong support team. Therefore, He called them more than just his disciples, but his friends.
So, in return, we too are to be concerned about the welfare of our Christian friends and want to be part of their support system; Encouraging each other in the faith.

For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  2 Peter 1:8
