Psalm 3:1-5
Hurt is the first emotion we'll discuss because it is the most frequently experienced painful emotion and because, if not properly managed, it can lead to other painful emotions such as anger, fear, and condemnation.
“Emotions” may reflect what we term our “soul”.
Dysfunctional families carry a lot of unresolved hurt.
If God cannot restore hurt, then no relationship can thrive or possibly even last.
- I. The Characteristics of Hurt
Hurt is Inevitable
- • The very nature of fallen man means that we will at some time fail one another.
- • To choose to love others is to choose to hurt.
Hurt is Personal.
- • People don’t always hurt us because they want to.
- • The harboring of hurt is like a cancer.
Hurt is Heart-felt.
- • You always hurt the ONES WHO LOVE YOU.
- II. The Dangers of Unresolved Hurt
The Danger of Emotional Imprisonment by Hurt
- • Ruminating - to go over in the mind repeatedly
The Danger of Becoming Your Hurt
- • This is assuming a victim stance or martyr attitude. Whiner!
The Danger of Closing Your Heart to Avoid Hurt
- • Losing vulnerability to avoid pain is not a healthy option.
- III. The Rebuilding of a Hurt Heart
Confess its Control
Realize its Consequences
Refuse its Continuance

- • Comfort – Ps 147:3
- • Forgiveness – 2 Cor. 2:6-7
