Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us—to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21
Beyond All We Could Ask or Think…
In the verses previous to these Paul told the Jews and Gentile believers in Ephesus what it means to truly be loved by God. He speaks of God’s boundless love for us and now is moving right into God’s boundless ability to do above and beyond anything we could ever ask or think. God’s ability to do for us is greater than anything we could ever dream of asking. This is the truth about our God and yet, why do we live without hope? Why do we get bogged down in our difficult circumstances?
Many times, we do not ask our God, who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us, because we do not have the faith to believe he will help us, or even hear us. We may have been calling out to him for a long time and now believe he has relegated us to our own consequences. We may even believe we are getting what we deserve. Maybe we don’t think we deserve his goodness. This is a lie from the enemy whose goal is to keep us from the abundance of God in our lives. He certainly does not want us to tap into the resurrection power in our lives through the Holy Spirit. He wants us to feel defeated, unworthy, and undeserving of God’s goodness, because he knows we will look for it somewhere else and in ways that are not pleasing to our Heavenly Father who holds all good things for us. Satan really doesn’t like it when God does above and beyond all we could ask or think. He gets all the glory when he answers prayers in such a way that is above and beyond our comprehension.
We have a Heavenly Father that loves us more than we could ever measure and is able to do far more than we could ever ask or think. We cannot even imagine all the things he can do in and through us and in our lives. And all the impossible requests that we hesitate or never make? He is able to do far more! Because his love for us is so limitless, we know we can trust him with whatever answer we get. We can surrender our impossible requests and hopeless circumstances. We can surrender our deepest desires. We can surrender our burdens, our grief, our fears, and our hopes and dreams and plans. We can trust in his sovereign wisdom and authority over our lives.
When God answers big prayers – and little ones – he is glorified. When we find ourselves in a crisis of belief, we should remember how he has answered our prayers in the past. We should remember his faithfulness and know we can trust in his faithfulness always. Like his love, it never runs out.
You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. .James 4:2b-3
What are you lacking in your life today because you simply have not asked God for it? Or are you asking with wrong motives? Also as believers we have so much power that we never tap into. Not only do we have the privilege as his children to have direct access to him, we have his ear. He loves us and wants us to ask him for the desires of our hearts – so long as they are pleasing to him.
No matter how extravagant our requests, God in his matchless power can give us more than we ask, and far beyond what our human minds can imagine.
