When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." Then He said, "Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground." Exodus 3:4-5
What is Holy Ground?
The term Holy Ground is only found many times in the Bible, but two times specifically in the life of Moses. The time referenced in the above scripture when God met Moses in the desert, and one time before when Moses met God on Mount Horeb (Sinai). On Mount Horeb, God commanded Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand him to let the people go from bondage. In the scripture above, God spoke to Moses from a burning bush in the desert. He told him two things: He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
It was not the ground that Moses stood on that was holy, but the presence of God. Anywhere God is – that is holy ground. Some religions today have people take off their shoes before they enter the building. Church is not the only place God is. We should always treat the house of the Lord – our churches – with respect, because it is a place set apart for us to worship Him. But we do not leave God on the doorstep when we leave church. That is why we should always be living our lives in a manner worthy of God, because as believers, He lives in us, and is with us all the time. For us today, Holy Ground may be in our living rooms, or our backyards, or our cars, or our workplace. Everywhere God is, is holy ground. Everywhere we take Him – or invite Him in,is holy ground.
What Happens on Holy Ground?
When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am. Exodus 3:4
God got Moses’ attention with the burning bush, and Moses looked deeper. Plenty of times we ignore or straight up miss the burning bush God puts in our lives. What if Moses had ignored the burning bush before him? It required a commitment and a desire on Moses’ part. God invited Him and he accepted. We invite God into our lives - we ask Him to be our Savior. He then invites us to go deeper in a relationship with Him, to be transformed by Him, and to be used by Him for His glory.
God invited Moses - He appointed him - gave him an assignment:
I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. So, I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey… Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt. Exodus 3:7-8; 10
We most likely will not get a burning bush like Moses did when God revealed Himself. But He is there and He wants us to be in tune with Him so we can grow deeper in our relationship with Him. He wants to mold and transform us to make us ready for the “assignments” He has for us. He wants us to pay attention to what He is leading us to do.
Invite God and open yourself up to His invitation. God called Moses and Moses immediately said “Here I am.” He might have had a crisis of belief when he found out what God wanted him to do, but he was willing, and God carried out His plan because he accepted God’s invitation. What can God do through you? What has He been preparing you for?
