And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. 1 Colossians 1:9-10
Choose Your Truth Wisely
We get to choose what we believe, and we get to choose where we find truth. There is so much information out there now due to technology that we can Google anything and find all kinds of information on any given subject. But not all the information at our fingertips is going to actually be true. There are some who purposefully seek to deceive us and give us false truth. There are others who want to believe something, so they make it truth, whether it is true or not! The key is discernment – along with the Word of God.
We get to choose, and not only do we get to choose, but we get to live our lives based on any truth we want to, because we have that freedom in this country. We have a lot of freedoms in or lives, so we need to be even more careful about what we choose to be the truth we build our lives upon. When we pick and choose our truth from all kinds of different sources, we will have a very unstable existence on a very unstable foundation.
When we exchange God’s truth with the world’s lies, we remove His hand from our lives. What truth do you want to stake your life, and eternity, on?
The truth of God is the same for all of us – no matter our circumstances, desires, weaknesses, or whatever is going on in our lives. We cannot bend it to be what we desire, or what we want to fit into our lives at that moment or for a specific situation. We may not like His truth at times, but His truth never changes, even if we don’t like it. We make the choice for ourselves what our truth will be. What truth will we listen to – the worlds or God’s? At some point we will choose one or the other.
Until we truly understand and know God, can we trust what He says about Himself, or the future - eternity, or about us? Learning who God is and reading His word will tell us about how He has fulfilled every word He says about Himself, who He is and His promises. This will be the foundation on which every other truth is built. God provided guidance for us on everything we could need in this life and we can find it all in the Bible.
When we study the truths of God, over and over, they will become engrained in our thinking, and in the choices we make, as well as reactions to the things that happen in our lives. When we are filled with the knowledge of his will and spiritual wisdom and understanding, then we will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord - a way fully pleasing to Him. When we walk in a way that is fully pleasing to Him, we will be filled with the knowledge of His will and understanding. It just keeps building on itself.
As we gain this understanding of God and who He is, we will be deeply rooted in these truths. When life gets crazy, or tragedy strikes, or when we go through a tough season, we can recall these truths. It’s so important to have these truths to cling to because the lies of this world will crumble away at some point. And when it does, others will be looking for truth that does not crumble but is eternal. We need to be sure that we are giving the world the truth they are seeking. We need to watch our own faith because the world is watching.
As Christians we believe that His word is truth – absolute truth – and absolute truth never changes. When we align our lives to His truth, and filter everything through that truth, we can rest assured that we are making the best choices and walking in the way He has made for us. We will see fruit in our lives when we are living in God’s truth - bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Not only will we bear fruit because of this truth, but we will continue to grow in His truth. This is not just knowledge for the sake of knowledge, but knowledge to live by and truth to build our lives upon.
