Today is the Day
"Today is the day" is an idiom that means today is the right day to do something specified because the conditions are right. Most of us who have lived for more than a couple of decades know that waiting for the conditions to be right is how to waste your life. Life is precious. Our days are numbered and none of us has unlimited days to sit and not do the things that need to be done.
As Christians we absolutely need to pray for God’s guidance and direction for every moment and decision of our lives. But sometimes God has illuminated a path or planted a vision in our hearts, and He is waiting on us to be obedient. It is so easy to get paralyzed in our circumstances because we don’t know where to start or what to do, so we do nothing. We put these things we need to do in a box to be opened at a later date. But we can trust God because He has been in all of our tomorrows. We cannot let fear of the unknown keep us from doing the things we need to do today. Waiting to do what we know we need to do also adds incredible underlying stress in our lives. Sometimes we need to say to ourselves “Today is the day…” and get up and do it without thinking about it. We certainly can be our own worst enemies. Every day should be committed to the Lord and His purposes for us. The future is beyond our control and all we have is today - this moment.
What is it that you need to do today?
The pile of clutter that needs to be organized…
The drawers and closets that need to be cleaned out…
The apology that you need to give…
The offense you need to lay down…
The book you need to read…
The family you need to invest in…
The child that needs your time…
The conversation you need to have…
The friend that needs to know Jesus…
The sin that you need to prune from your life…
The forgiveness that needs to be forgiven…
The Bible you need to open…
The prayer you need to pray…
The Savior who is waiting for you to pick up the relationship again…
The conditions will never be one hundred percent right. You cannot look at your circumstances and wait to do what needs to be done because you could wait for the rest of your life for the conditions to be right. It is not good to put off doing the everyday things we need to do, but the greatest tragedies of all are the relationships we put off restoring and especially our own relationship with God. Today is the day, and the moment is now. Whether it is cleaning and organizing your home, or if it is returning to an abandoned relationship with Christ, we are all out of days to sit and do nothing.
Even if God has us in a season of waiting, there is still work to be done while we wait. The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand - Jesus has already come and provided atonement for all who receive Him as their Savior. This is the day for repentance and grace. This is the day you embrace it and turn/turn back to Him. The Kingdom of Heaven is here for you. Jesus has already made all the conditions perfect through Him. It is available right now - and there is nothing you need to do to take hold of it, except to believe, repent, and receive it.
At an acceptable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. See, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation! 2 Corinthians 6:2
