A Supernatural Helper

With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.  Ephesians 6:18

A Supernatural Helper

We spend very little time, and some days none at all, doing the very thing that will bring us life, praying. Prayer is our lifeline, our direct connection to our Heavenly Father. We overwhelm ourselves by complicating the act of praying. We think we have to say certain words, in certain ways, or to be in a special place. But God just wants us to talk to Him.

Satan does not want us to pray because he knows the power of prayer. He wants us to be intimidated by our preconceived notions of what we have to do to talk to Him. The truth is that we don’t have to use big words or say them in a certain way. We don’t have to be in a special prayer closet or in church. We can talk to Him while we walk down the street or while we are driving in our car.

Desperation and coming to the end of ourselves can make us feel vulnerable and insignificant. Satan would love for us to give up, to quit. He would love for us, in our desperation, to believe that there is no hope. Even when we have no words left, God knows our hearts and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us – He groans for us. When we don’t know how or what to pray, he is our special helper who is the source from which we can draw spiritual air to breathe.

The beginning of a powerful, joyful and meaningful relationship with God is the discovery of the Holy Spirit. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God.   1 Corinthians 2:12 NASB

Praying in the Holy Spirit

God gave us the Holy Spirit as a liaison between us and Him. He intercedes on our behalf  and enables us to understand and experience all God has given us.  Before Jesus’ time on earth was over, He told his disciples that He would send God’s Holy Spirit to live in us to be a helper - I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.  John 14:16-17

We communicate with God, through the Holy Spirit, in prayer. This is how God will bring glory to His name and reveal His purpose and will for our lives. Prayer is what fortifies us and strengthens our faith.

Jude 20-21 says But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.  This is what Jude was telling these early Christians to do in order to contend for the faith. We build ourselves up in the faith by clinging to what we know about God and learning more to fortify our faith. Pray in the Holy Spirit according to the spirit’s leading. He is our helper who leads us and intercedes for us when we don’t have the words.

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18
