Weapons to Demolish Strongholds – 2 Corinthians 10:2-5 - Submitted by Kay Crumley
Believers have been given weapons with which to battle the forces of evil. Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus what the armor of God is and how it used for protection in battle (Eph 6). As Christ followers the Holy Spirit lives in us to guide, correct, and speak through us (John 16:13). We are given the authority to teach and correct by the Spirit (Titus 2:15). Because He lives in us, we have the authority to resist temptation, overcome sin, claim God’s protection & provision, and refute Satan’s lies. Therefore, the power against the enemy is in us. Satan desires to make us impotent, useless, and ineffective for God. That is spiritual battle. Satan works to build lies that become strongholds that renders us helpless for the Kingdom of God.
Paul is writing to the church at Corinth attempting to counter the work of false teachers. He opens chapter 10 countering the accusations that he, Paul, was of the world rather than living a Godly life. The war we face isn’t of this world but in the spiritual realm. These weapons have divine power.
Where does divine power come from? We are human and don’t possess that in our own ability. We have divine/spiritual power because of Him in us.
2 I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Paul did not want to be confrontational, bold, when he was with them but to be gentle in his teaching of the truth of the Lord. He had been accused of being of the world since he preached with loving kindness rather than severely.
He proceeded, in verses 3-5, to defend his authority as an apostle by presenting the way we fight against the enemy in the spiritual realm. Our war is different from the wars of this world. We are in a spiritual battle, not a physical one. Therefore, we don’t use worldly weapons against fellow humans. Worldly weapons include physical weapons like swords and spears as well as psychological weapons such as manipulation, smooth words, image of success, or perception of power.
We have divine power that provides spiritual weapons for battle within the heavenlies. The Corinthian believes saw Paul’s posture of humility to God as a weakness. We pull down strongholds, wrong thoughts and perceptions, by contradicting Satan’s lies with the truth of His Word, His way of thinking, having the mind of Christ, (2 Cor. 2:16).
As children of God, part of His family, we must battle against every thought that is opposed to the Word or knowledge of God. We must evaluate our thoughts, sift out those that are not based on His truth and cast them out. Then we bring our thoughts, our understanding, and our minds in alignment with His truth. That is how we overcome strongholds, defeat lies and become the light in a dark world pointing others to the love of Christ. We have been given the authority to be victorious (Romans 8:37). We have the authority to advance the kingdom of God in our lives and in the world. To realize that authority we must be anchored in Him, rooted in the truth, humbled to God’s sovereignty, and compassionate to others.
