More Than Conquerors – Romans 8:35-39 Submitted by Kay Crumley
Paul wrote the book of Romans to the Christians living in Rome. He is likely in his third missionary journey heading to Jersulam to deliver an offering taken from Gentile churches for the poor Jewish Christians. He planned to go to Rome from there. Tony Evans gives Chapter 8 the title ‘The Spirit Leads us to Glory.’ It is a chapter of encouragement and hope. Some of the points he makes that are reminders of our position in Christ is: verse 1 There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ because of what Jesus has done for us. Verse 16, we are God’s children, co-heirs with Christ. Verse 27 The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with God when we don’t know how to pray. And verse 28 assures us that all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. We can all benefit from reading this chapter when circumstances have caused distress. We often need a reminder of who we are in Christ and the promises He gives us.
Paul begins his conclusion with one of the most uplifting verses; 31 What, then, are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Just consider all that God has done for us through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Even in the most desperate of circumstances, we have hope, joy, peace, and comfort because of Christ in us.
Nothing, no one, can separate us from the love of Christ. There is nothing that can take us out of the love of God. Nothing can destroy our hope of being with Him in eternity. Paul provides a rather long list of possibilities even quoting Psalm 44, we will face suffering and persecution, yet the truth remains – NOTHING can separate us from our Lord and Savior. He will never leave us or abandon us.
35 Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can affliction or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:
Because of you
we are being put to death all day long;
we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The result of that assurance stated in verse 37, we are more than conquerors. Again, Paul provides a list of powers, enemies of both earth and spiritual realm that might attempt to defeat us. He concludes with an all-encompassingdescription of ‘other created thing’ so that we know even things we can’t imagine are included. There is absolutely nothing that has more power than our creator God who is all powerful and loves us so completely that nothing can take away that love.
What are you fighting today? What has robbed you of the confidence found in being a child of God? While Satan may have you feeling defeated and discouraged. Take some time in Romans 8 to be reminded of Who is truly in control and has you in the palm of His hand. He is our strong tower and gives us the victory in Him as conqueror over our circumstances.
